About Anju

I started my career as a journalist working for The Times of India before launching into the deep end of sustainable development at the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi. I joined CSE as a young animal lover, concerned mainly with preserving the environment for wildlife. I left this University of Hard Knocks ten years later with my naive idealism bruised, battered and reshaped. At the forefront of the war between sustainability and development, I learnt, saving cuddly animals can be viewed as a relatively heartless pursuit. There are people who are worse off.

I have since worked with many of the best global institutions in the business of sustainable development, including the United Nations Environment Programme and Oxfam GB in Oxford. I have worked as a consultant for others, including the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN Development Programme, Oxford University Centre for the Environment and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

I currently head the Policy Analysis and Publications Unit of the European Capacity Building Initiative, am a Visiting Fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development and work as a consultant for the International Institute of Sustainable Development’s Reporting Services.

In addition to a number of papers and articles, I have co-authored Slow Murder: The deadly story of vehicular pollution in India, and co-edited two books on global environmental governance – Green Politics and Poles Apart. My work is focused on seeking equitable solutions that balance environment and development concerns.
